Mobility scooters have made the lives of those who are physically handicapped easier and more convenient. A mobility scooter is like a wheelchair, but with a motor attached. A scooter usually has a basket attached that allows a person to go shopping or just carry added extras that they might need. A mobility scooter has many advantages, but the scooters of today also have limitations that many people do not realize. However, if a person does their homework before purchasing one of the many power chairs available, then the advantages can far outweigh the disadvantages.

The advantages of mobility scooters may heavily outweigh the disadvantages for those who are physically challenged. One of the main advantages of the scooters is that, for some people, if they lack the stamina in order to maintain the wheelchairs manual maneuvers, then this problem is solved. Another positive for the scooters is one that many would not even think to consider. The foot rests of a manual wheelchair are sometimes very difficult to manage. However, with a scooter a person can swivel the seat and easily get out. One of the best things about a scooter is that many insurance carriers will cover them, whereas they will not cover powered wheelchairs. This is another reason why people invest in scooters as opposed to an electric wheelchair.

Mobility scooters have several limitations that people may never think to consider. Those who are severely disabled may not be able to use scooters because of the way the seat is made. Scooters are not intended for those who have problems with their posture or arms. Also, this type of mobility unit does not allow for ease of patient transfer from bed to chair. Those who are severely disabled may wish to rethink about investing in power scooters as a way to get around. Other limitations include not being able to easily maneuver in nursing home rooms because of the limited space, and having difficulty traveling in or around town because of the curb heights. A person should seriously consider if a mobility scooter is right for them.

Those who desire mobility scooters may not be aware of both their limitations and advantages. However, if a person does the research, then they can decide if these scooters are the right fit for their lifestyle. No matter where a person lives, scooters can be adapted if they know the limitations that they may face. Scooters make a person's life better if they know the in's and outs of owning one.
