Electric Scooters - Some Basic Facts

Electric scooters have exploded onto the market. Older adults and those with disabilities use an electric motor scooter to increase their mobility. Environmentally conscious young adults have turned to scooters as an alternative to expensive, polluting automobiles. Children love the speed and excitement they can achieve. Prices are quite reasonable, and the scooters cost almost nothing to operate. Scooters can be moved inside buildings for storage, thus eliminating the need to fight for a parking spot.

The popularity of scooters has led to a flood of available options. Price, quality, and capability vary widely from company to company, and even from model to model. Lower end scooters for children start at approximately $200, while similar scooters for adults begin at $300. These low-end scooters are generally acceptable for light use on reasonably flat terrain. However, if you plan to use your scooter for transportation, you should plan to invest more money.

Be certain to check local laws prior to purchasing a scooter. Depending on your location, applicable laws may govern licensing, insurance, horsepower, riding at night, and even required protective gear. Special laws often apply to children as well. Many locations have a minimum age of 12 to operate an electric scooter, and a few require children to be 16.

Check the product specifications before buying an electric scooter, to ensure that it will fit where you want it to go. Many electric scooters either fold or disassemble, so check both the fully assembled dimensions and the folded or disassembled dimensions. Also consider weight. If you plan to take your scooter with you when you travel, make sure that you are able to transport it easily.

The weight of the intended rider may limit your options. Many electric scooters have weight limits ranging from 180 - 200 pounds. If the intended rider is close to the maximum weight, it is better to purchase a different scooter. Also, keep in mind that you may transport shopping bags or other items on the scooter. Consider the weight of items that you may carry when deciding on the weight limit that will suffice.

Every part of an electric scooter, from the batteries to the drive train to the tires, will affect the overall performance in real world conditions. Battery life is an important consideration, as is the time required to recharge them. Horsepower affects the scooter's ability to handle inclines and rough roads. Weather resistance is important if you plan to use the scooter in areas with severe weather, including extreme heat or cold. All-terrain tires can save wear and tear, as well as providing traction on slick or uneven surfaces.

Style, color, and design should also be considered. Your electric scooter is a reflection of you, so you choose one that you find aesthetically pleasing. With the plethora of available scooters, it is not necessary to choose between style and functionality.

This type of travel has become quite popular as a sensible solution to the problems of gas prices, pollution, and congestion. Electric scooters are now available in almost endless combinations of price, performance features, and design style. With a bit of research, you can find a scooter that will meet your needs in performance and price, while offering a color and design that reflect your personal style.
